Process

My question is, would music be what it is today without African Americans? I chose this because I'm interested in music and wanted to write about a topic that I'm interested in. I wanted to enjoy researching my question. My question didn't change while researching because I already knew a little bit about this topic and found a lot of good sources that proved my point. There were a lot of good articles that also explored my question and it was fun to read them. I'd say my favorite was the article History of Rap and HipHop. It was cool to read because you could play the songs while reading the article. You can find a lot of good sources by just searching up the impact African Americans have on music. There's also some cool documentaries that are worth watching like The Black Godfather.

Context

In my essay I use mostly the history of how a lot of popular genres like jazz, blues, and rap were created and evolved by African Americans. I also talk about how white artists like Elvis took a ton of inspiration from Black artists. A lot of people don't know this because of the lack of credit that was given to them. That's also the whole reason I asked this question because many people like to ignore the impact African Americans have on pop culture. Another thing was how there's people working in the backgrounds who are Black that help make music happen. People like producers and music executives. African American music started on plantations when they were slaves and evolved into the most influential genres on earth.

My thesis statement was,
I can't help but to say music would not be the same without African Americans. I would argue that way too many genres were started by African Americans, many non African American artists have taken inspiration from African Americans, and that there are African Americans behind the scenes making music happen as well. This worked well with my essay because I already stated my reasons of why I believe that and I was able to use my research to back up my claims.
